What is RSS?
RSS (Really Simple Syndication or Rich Site Summary) is an XML-based format for sharing and distributing Web content, such as news headlines. Using an RSS reader, you can view data feeds from various news sources, such as CNN.com, including headlines, summaries, and links to full stories. We know what you're thinking… that sounds really scary and really geeky. Well, don't worry… it's not. It's a quick and easy way for you to get the news you want from around the Web, including mainstream media sites, blogs, corporations, etc. For the full list of all the RSS feeds that CNN.com provides, please visit the CNN.com RSS page.

What is the little red icon I see all over the site?  
The little red icon with the white radio waves is the RSS icon. Whenever you see this icon, that means that there is a corresponding RSS feed. You can either click on the icon or the associated text to subscribe to that RSS feed.

How can I "subscribe" to RSS?
There are several different ways to subscribe to RSS feeds. You can use a downloadable RSS reader, you can use a Web-based RSS reader (sometimes called an aggregator), or you can use your Web browser. These readers allow you to subscribe to the feeds of your choosing, from whatever sites you'd like. Then they continually monitor for updates, sending new items to your reader. When you click on the RSS feed icon, you will be presented with the RSS feed page. You can either simply view that page with the latest RSS entries or you can subscribe using one of the easy-to-use Web-based readers. Simply click on the reader of your choosing and you will be subscribing to the feed in that Web-based reader.

Can I use RSS in my browser?
Yes, there are a few different ways you can use RSS in your browser. The simplest way is by clicking on the feed itself and consuming the feed contents in your browser. You should see the latest entries in that feed displayed right on the page. You can also subscribe to that feed in one of several different options available for Web-based RSS readers.

[insert screenshots from auto-discovery links] If you are using IE9, Firefox, or Safari as your Web browser, you can also use your browser itself as an RSS reader. When you land on a page with an RSS feed, you browser should notify you that there is a feed available (this is usually done with an orange icon notifier). Simply click on that icon and subscribe to the feed. Then, you can get updates from that feed directly in your browser.

What is an RSS aggregator?
An RSS aggregator is a term used to describe an RSS reader, usually a Web-based RSS reader. These aggregator often contain feeds and links from a variety of sources. The examples listed above under "Web-based readers" are often considered to be RSS aggregators.

What are the terms of use for CNN.com's RSS feeds?

These Terms of Use govern your use of the RSS service.
