East Timor Constituent Assembly August 30, 2001
At stake in this election:
  • Seats in the constituent assembly: 88
Description of government structure:
  • Administrative affairs in East Timor have been managed by the UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) since October 25, 1999.
  • An 88-member Constituent Assembly shall be elected in these elections. The Constituent Assembly will be charged with adopting a constitution within 90 days of its first session.
  • As part of its responsibilities, the Constituent Assembly will decide on the form of government for East Timor and the date of first elections.
Description of electoral system:
  • 13 of the 88 members will be elected from 13 single-member districts. The remaining 75 members will be elected by party-list proportional representation from one nationwide constituency.
  • Independent candidates are allowed to run in this election.
