Go to: X-RAY SPECS This X-ray snapshot from the Chandra X-ray space observatory of the elliptical galaxy NGC 4697 shows diffuse clouds of hot gas sprinkled with numerous points of light. The bright dots reveal the presence of black holes and neutron stars, which draw from nearby companion star massive amounts of matter, which heats up and gives off intense X-ray energy. (06/19/02)
