Subject: Albright Flies To Geneva For Iraq Meeting

U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright headed for Geneva, Switzerland today and a planned Thursday meeting aimed at finding a diplomatic solution to the U.N. arms inspection crisis with Iraq.

Albright will meet at 2 a.m. local time (8 p.m. EST today) with Russian Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook and French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine.

The meeting is intended to examine what it is that Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz agreed to Tuesday in Moscow during a meeting with Russian President Boris Yeltsin.

The Egyptian government said Albright would make a brief stop in Cairo. While her plane is being refueled she will meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Muhammad Moussa before traveling on to Switzerland.

State Department spokesman James Rubin said the U.S. was not sure what kind of agreement the Russians had extracted from the Iraqis, but the crisis would be over if indeed Baghdad had agreed to a resumption of U.N. weapons inspections and compliance with all U.N. resolutions.

The secretary of state spent several hours overnight in telephone conversations with her three counterparts and with Washington in setting up the Thursday morning meeting.
