(CNN) -- Militants killed five police officers and wounded 10 other people on Monday in Pakistan's restive southwestern province of Balochistan, police said.

Six armed militants hurled hand-held bombs at a police checkpoint near Pishin town in Balochistan, said Asmat Khan, a local police official. He said two police men were dead on the spot whereas three succumbed to injuries on their way to hospital.

The bomb attack, which was followed by "intense firing" by the militants, wounded three police officers and seven civilians, Khan said.

The assailants sped away on motorcycles after the attack, he said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
