Past Emmys hosts show up to help Neil Patrick Harris

It's not Neil Patrick Harris' first time hosting the Primetime Emmy Awards, but where will he rank this year among the best and worst hosts? Remember when...
Bryant Gumbel, right, hosted the 49th annual Emmy Awards in 1997, and has overwhelmingly been panned as one of the worst. Seen here helping the late actor Christopher Reeve read the winner for outstanding supporting actor for a miniseries or special, this was about as exciting as Gumbel's hosting duties got.
It was speculated that Bryant Gumbel did such a poor job that the Emmys decided to just be without a host the next year. Instead it depended on star power like legendary comedians Milton Berle, left, Bob Hope, center, and Sid Caesar, right, for the 50th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in 1998. Still, that show was less than stellar, too.
Do you remember when David Hyde Pierce and Jenna Elfman co-hosted the 51st Emmy Awards in 1999 and did that leotard dance? Best that it be forgotten.
Ellen DeGeneres was widely praised for her hosting of the 53rd Emmy Awards in November 2001. The awards were held after twice being rescheduled because of the September 11 terrorist attacks and the ongoing conflict in Afghanistan. Most agreed DeGeneres displayed grace under pressure.
Conan O'Brien was just plain old fun when he hosted the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in 2006.
Jimmy Kimmel joined hosts Tom Bergeron, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum, Ryan Seacrest and Jeff Probst onstage during the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2008. The audience did not love the group host dynamic and the show became one of the lowest rated telecasts ever.
Neil Patrick Harris sang, danced and goofed his way into viewers' hearts at the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards, held at the Nokia Theatre on September 20, 2009, in Los Angeles.
A year after his "Late Night" premiered, Jimmy Fallon was hailed for his hosting style during the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards held at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live on August 29, 2010, in Los Angeles.
Is it possible to be the best AND the worst? When Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 64th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in 2012, he either "made the Emmys telecast much less of a chore than it could have been" or received either a C,D,or F grade. There's just no pleasing everyone.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- The Emmys opening included a bit with past hosts
- They showed up to "advise" this year's host, Neil Patrick Harris
- From the audience, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler try to get him to disrobe
(CNN) -- It's almost like they read our minds!
Part of the opening of Sunday night's 65th Primetime Emmys was a mash-up of some former hosts who came to offer "advice" to this year's host, Neil Patrick Harris. It was our best/worst hosts gallery come to life!
Last year's host, Jimmy Kimmel, popped up first warning Harris that he should enjoy the experience and take it all in because "there's a good chance they won't ask you back next year."
Jane Lynch then appeared on stage to complain that she hadn't been asked back because she was a woman.
Who won big at the Emmys?
"Come on Jane, I don't think anyone that watched you host that night thought of you as a woman," Harris said.
2013 Emmys show is full of surprises
Jimmy Fallon broke into a tap dance routine as he offered up that Harris should do a little song and dance routine like he did hosting the Tony Awards. "That is far too gay," Harris responded.
He reminded them all that he had actually hosted the Emmys before any of them. But not before Conan O'Brien who appeared to lament "I hosted the Emmys before all of you. Back when it meant something!"
"Back then, an Emmy broadcast was watched by over 900 billion people," O'Brien joked. "There was no 'Honey Bee Boo.' "
But the best was yet to come.
"House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey goes into character to let the audience know that "it's all going according to plan." He mentions the "cherry on the proverbial sundae" right before 2013 Golden Globes host Amy Poehler and Tina Fey start heckling Harris from the audience.
"Take your pants off and twerk it," Fey advises. "I come to awards shows for the twerking!"
Sadly, there was none of that as Harris said "that would be degrading."
"Yeah, it would be degrading, but we would be 'de-grateful,'" Poehler joked.
