Olmert grew up in a settlement called Nahalat Jabotinsky near present-day Binyamina.

Elected mayor of Jerusalem in 1993, Olmert defeated Teddy Kollek with 59% of the vote. Kollek had been mayor since 1965.

He was successfully treated for prostate cancer in 2007.

November 7, 2005 - Olmert is appointed Minister of Finance

November 2005 - Leaves the Likud party and joins Ariel Sharon to form the new Kadima party.

January 5, 2006 - Is named acting prime minister after Ariel Sharon suffers a stroke.

March 28, 2006 - The Kadima party wins the largest number of parliamentary seats, ensuring that Olmert will be the next prime minister.

May 26, 2006 - Addresses a joint session of the United States Congress.

May 8, 2008 - Israeli police and the Ministry of Justice reveal they are investigating Olmert for receiving money illegally while he was mayor of Jerusalem and a cabinet minister.

July 30, 2008 - Olmert announces his intention to resign as prime minister when Kadima elects a new chairman.

September 18, 2008 - Tzipi Livni becomes the leader of the Kadima party.

September 20, 2008 - Announces his resignation shortly after police recommend charges in corruption probes surrounding him. He continues as caretaker prime minister until a successor is sworn in.

March 31, 2009 - Benjamin Netanyahu is sworn in as Prime Minister.

August 30, 2009 - Is indicted in several corruption cases on charges including fraud and breach of trust.

September 25, 2009-July 10, 2012 - Olmert's corruption trial ends after almost three years with him being found guilty of breach of trust, and being acquitted on two corruption-related charges.

January 5, 2012 - Is indicted on bribery charges, along with 14 others, in connection with three Jerusalem real estate projects, known as the Holyland Affair.

February 13, 2012 - Holyland Affair trial begins.

September 24, 2012 - Is sentenced to pay a fine of 75,300 New Israeli Shekels (about $19,000) and a 3 month suspended jail sentence. As part of his sentencing he is cleared to run for political office.

July 4, 2013 - Reversing an earlier claim that the office was too busy, the prosecution is seeking to appeal Olmert's July 2012 acquittals.
