Gunmen kill female police officer in Afghanistan's Helmand province

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- A senior female police officer in Afghanistan has died after being shot by two unidentified gunmen in the southern province of Helmand, authorities said Monday.
The gunmen, who were riding a motorcycle, shot 1st Lt. Negar on Sunday morning as she was on her way to the police station in Lashkar Gah, the capital of Helmand. Like many people in Afghanistan, Negar only went by one name.
She died from her wounds nearly 24 hours later in a government hospital, the provincial governor's spokesman, Omar Zwak, said Monday.
A police officer for more than 20 years, Negar worked for the Afghan National Police in a province largely controlled by the Taliban.
Helmand Governor Mohammed Naem condemned the attack in a statement.
No group has claimed responsibility for the shooting.
In July, two other female police officers were killed by unidentified gunmen in Helmand.
According to a report released by Oxfam last week, there were 30 female police officers in Helmand as of February.
