Penalty shootouts, fair or foul?
(CNN) -- Penalty shootouts -- great drama, enormous tension, huge entertainment. But are they fair? CNN's Richard Quest asked for your ideas on alternative ways to settle a World Cup deadlock. You can have your say by mailing quest@cnn.com. If the teams are equal on goals, then count the corner kicks. If they are equal on corners, count the free kicks. If they are equal on free kicks, count the throw-ins. If they are equal on throw-ins, keep playing until something happens. Ken Rolls, Australia All the kickers and the goalkeepers should be blindfolded for penalty kicks. Dr. Ossei-Anto, Ghana Penalty shootouts is a simple method. If you are really looking for the simplest, just toss a coin. Atique Atid, Pakistan Penalty shootouts are a very unfair way of determining the winning team, especially in a match as crucial as a World Cup. Steve, Kenya
The game has to have an end . Penalties are the only way to do that. Kizito Joahni Nchari, Germany We should have the goalkeepers remove and the golden goal rule apply. Olumide Ademidun, Nigeria The best thing is to extend the play time or reschedule the match for another day. Annie Mungai How about using a points system based on yellow and red cards. Philip Marner, England Golden goal yes, penalty shoot out.. nightmare -- turns into a lottery. Why not just toss a coin and be done? Greg Murphy, Saudi Arabia At full time, each side withdraws 5 outfield players. The remaining 5 plus the goalie play for 5 minutes. Then the "rested" 5 players come on again and the exhausted first 5 go off. Matches might finish with a small cricket score, but they would not be drawn. John Linton It simply is tough to accept penalty shoot-outs after a good game but there isn't better way of deciding a stalemate. Anil, India If after extra time there is no golden goal then the team that has had the most corner kicks should be declared the winner. Peter Fraser, Turkey Sudden death overtime, until one side or the other scores, is the way to go. If the game drags on for hours then one side or the other will eventually collapse, the other side will score and everyone can go home (if they haven't already). Mike Montesa Take the goalies off and play until a goal is scored. Roger Radburn, Australia They should play until the last man is standing. William Miller, Russia |
