German tourist taken by crocodile
DARWIN, Australia -- A young German tourist has been killed by a crocodile while swimming in a popular Australian national park. The 24-year-old woman and her sister had gone for a late night swim in a billabong, or waterhole, near their camping site in Kakadu National Park in the remote Northern Territory. Police say the two women were part of an organized tour group staying in the park. "It appears a crocodile has attacked one of the group, a 24-year-old German tourist," Australian Associated Press reports Senior Sergeant Colin Smith saying Wednesday. He said members of the tour group saw a dark shape come out of the water, take the woman, then swim away. After an initial search to find the woman's body failed, police now report they have sighted the corpse but have not yet been able to recover it. Police say a 4-meter (17-foot) saltwater crocodile has been harpooned but a second crocodile is preventing them retrieving the woman's body. Crocodiles are commonplace in the tropical northern reaches of Australia and it is understood the area where the women were swimming was clearly signposted with warnings about crocodiles.
