Judge shot dead in Spain

BILBAO, Spain (CNN) -- A Spanish judge was shot and killed in a suburb of the Basque city of Blibao on Wednesday morning, police told CNN.

Judge Jose Maria Lidon Corbi was shot in Getxo at about 7:30 a.m. (1:30 a.m. EST).

"A judge from the provincial court of Vizcaya has died, several people shot him when he was getting into his car," a spokesman for the Basque police force said.

The attack follows a major car bomb attack in Madrid on Tuesday which injured 99 people but was reported to have missed its intended target.

That blast was blamed on the armed Basque separatist group ETA.

ETA has killed about 800 people in a campaign of bombings and shootings spanning 30 years to back its demand for Basque self-determination.
